When I was younger, my grandpa was the most amazing man I knew. He would drive grandma crazy, which not many could do...
The things I remember the most is watching John Wayne movies on Saturdays and eating Vienna sausages with mustard. Grandma would bitch that they stunk up the den, but we never cared. Then we would watch the Houston Oilers on Sunday.
I am pretty sure football was more important than church, to Papa. I didn't care because I loved spending time with him. Plus, he taught me loads of "unladylike" behaviors. Between him and my dad, I'm very surprised I can even go out to eat in public without totally embarrassing my girls.
Thinking back on those times I often wonder, why did grandpa choose to cheer for the Houston Oilers... Was it because it's where we lived? Maybe, it was their quarterback or their head coach? There are all the questions that I think about now, and he's not around to answer me.
I remember the first time a football game got me in trouble... It was the Superbowl and my brother bet me $20 that a certain team would win.
My older brother was always so darn sure of himself and his team... That I told him to put his money where his mouth was. During the game, the team I chose won! My dad and grandpa seen him giving me $20 and got mad that I was betting against a game... Moral of the story, we both lost that $20 and were in big trouble for a week.
Never did I bet my brother for money ever again.
Years later, I have met an odd family. Who have too many teams to choose from... Let me tell you the line up of their family and you can laugh with me.
My best friend - Packers
Her husband - Steelers
Mother n law -PackersFather n law - Redskins
Sister n law - Bears
Brother n law - Raiders
That's just her family, try Sunday's at her place! (giggles)
I never really followed football much till Houston got them another team. Stopped soon after, though... I was so sick of everyone bitchin' about David Carr like it was all his fault they were losing.
Never mind they were a new and young team. Who needed to learn how to work as a team. Still, the media just loved shredding him and making things his problem. Did you know... That on a football team, there's only one person?
Just like when they crucified Patton Manning over a deflated football. Players are being judged so hard these days. I'm not sure why they play... Outside of the crazy amount of money they get paid.
I find myself watching it more and more these days. I enjoy it, but I wonder if the players truly enjoy the game anymore... I still have so much to learn about football. I wish my grandpa was here to teach me and watch it with me.
It's odd the things you find you like when you're just sitting there waiting for time to pass. Living in the middle of nowhere how could I choose a team? We don't even have one here! Except for the obvious college teams.
I guess could always be like my friends family and cheer them all on. See how well that would work out for me...
Maybe someday they will do away with the Superbowl trophy and just give them all participation trophies... Like they do kids.
Okay... You gotta admit that would be funny! We teach our kids stupid shit like there are no losers. I prefer to tell mine, second place is only the first loser. The truth is always better in life.
The point to my ramblings today is that I miss watching football with my grandpa... Still wondering how he decided what team he wanted to support.
